The Importance of an Annual Exam

Our pets age 5-7 times faster than we do.  This makes examinations by the doctor, at least annually, very important.  So many things can change in just one year.  In the wellness evaluation, the doctor will collect information from you about your pet’s recent health, travel history, current nutrition, and any behavior issues you are having.

The doctor will next give your pet a thorough nose-to-tail medical exam.  She will check all body parts and organ systems, evaluating for changes or evidence of dysfunction.  Among the things she will be evaluating for is: dental disease, heart disease, respiratory problems, skin or ear conditions, obesity, vision, joint or back pain, lumps or bumps, and changes in the abdominal organs. Early detection of health issues is the key to a longer and healthier life for your pet.

The doctor will thoroughly discuss any problems that are uncovered. She will provide advice on any behavior issues and specific nutritional needs your pet may have.  She will make sure your pet is free of parasites and discuss how to prevent parasites. She will discuss which vaccinations would be appropriate for your pet, depending on his lifestyle and risk factors.  This in-depth annual examination and preventive health care is the reason that pets are living longer today.
